18 . Tojo and cabinet resigns over loss of Saipan.
20 . Attempted assassination of Hitler.
21 . Guam till 10Aug . 54,891 troops engaged; 1,435 killed/missing, 5,648 wounded.
24 . Tinian till 01Aug . 30,000 troops engaged; 389 killed, 1,816 wounded. To become major B-29 base.
28 . FDR, Nimitz, Leahy, MacArthur meet in Honolulu to discuss Pacific strategy ; decide to liberate Philippines.
August '4404 . TF 58 begins strikes on Iwo Jima, Chichi Jima and Haha Jima, Bonins.
07 . Submarines active all month, seven Japanese ships sunk this day, including Nagara (CL).
14 . Joseph Kennedy, Jr died in experimental drone bomber attack. Would have been president.
